University of Georgia

Come tour the Classic City and the best school in the Southeast!

Hi there! My name is Grey and I'm a fourth year Geology Major with a focus on energy and mineral resources. I love Athens and have been here for about 2 years now. My favorite thing to do in the city is to go see live music at Georgia theater or 40 Watt, and I'm involved in a couple different things on campus like club whitewater, geology club, and interdisciplinary field people. I also love to stay active, whether it be riding my bike, running on UGA's trails, hiking, or backpacking. Once I graduate from UGA I'm looking to go to graduate school working on mining and mineral deposits.

Describe your college experience

College has been an incredible time for me; meeting new people and expanding my interests has been critical in the growth that I've experienced over the past three and a half years. Developing new passions for not only what I'm studying but other subjects I had never even considered before coming to school has been an invaluable experience afforded through higher education. Transitioning from high school to college was difficult in the beginning, but now that I've gotten a chance to settle in, develop a network of support, and achieve some clarity on what my life and career will look like as an adult, I have no doubt that college and UGA specifically was the right choice for me.

Favorite class

My favorite class was Geology of North America on UGA's Interdisciplinary Field Program. It was a field based class where we took vans all throughout the Western US over the course of a summer- learning and experiencing firsthand the geology of the entire country. One of the biggest reasons why Geology has been such a great academic focus for me is the aspect of travel and seeing the world, which this class and study away opportunity was perfect for me.

Career goals

I'm planning on getting my Master's in Ore deposits and Economic Geology, and want to break into the natural resources/mining industry following graduate school.

Ideal way to spend a free night

If I can work it into my schedule, my favorite thing to do on a free night or weekend is to go backpacking in North Georgia with my friends. Being out in nature, especially following a difficult week of exams, helps me to reset and approach the next week with confidence and motivation. If I can't do that, I often get a meal downtown by myself or with friends just to experience the liveliness of the city.

High school or secondary school

Marist High School, Atlanta, GA

Previous college

I transferred from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Transferring was seamless despite having to manually make sure that some of my classes transferred over correctly. The social aspect of transferring was no issue, as much of the community I had built in high school was already at UGA. Also, UGA gives their students ample opportunity to create new networks of friends and peers through clubs and campus events, which I've been grateful to have taken advantage of during my time here.

Grey was fantastic and had a lot of information regarding everything on campus. He spoke well about his personal experiences and it helped me get an idea of what my life at UGA would look like. Thank you, Grey.
