University of Pennsylvania
Sophomore in Nursing
Hi! My name is Lisanyeli, and I'm a nursing student at Penn, Class of 2027. I'm originally from Brooklyn, NY, and I’m a first-generation college student. When I'm not in clinicals or studying, you can find me dancing with Onda Latina or getting involved in the Latin community on campus. I love meeting new people and discovering new things to do in Philly. Let me know if you have any questions—I’m happy to help!

Describe your college experience
Transitioning to college was a big adjustment for me, especially as a first-generation student. The academic rigor at Penn has definitely challenged me, but it’s been rewarding to see my hard work pay off. Balancing clinicals, studying, and being involved in extracurriculars has taught me a lot about time management and perseverance. Connecting with the Latin community and getting involved with Latin organizations on campus has made Penn feel like home, and I’m grateful for the support system I’ve found. I've built some of the most meaningful friendships here.
Tip for future students
One tip I’d give to future students is to take the time to explore all the opportunities available to you, both academically and outside of class. Penn has so much to offer, and getting involved in activities that interest you can make your college experience more fulfilling. I also recommend staying organized and managing your time well—things can get overwhelming, but staying on top of assignments and using a planner or calendar helps. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it—whether it’s from a professor, advisor, or peer, people are always willing to support you.
Favorite class
My favorite class has been Nursing of Women and Infants. It’s been amazing to learn about maternal and neonatal health in-depth, especially since that’s an area I’m passionate about. The class covers important concepts and techniques, giving me a deeper understanding of the care needed for women and infants. I love being able to actually work with patients and put what I learn into practice during my clinical assignment at a hospital in Philadelphia, where I can see how everything comes together in real-life situations.
Career goals
After college, I hope to work in a hospital setting, specifically in labor and delivery, postpartum, or the NICU. I’m passionate about maternal and neonatal health, and I want to make a positive impact on families during such an important time in their lives. Ultimately, I want to be someone who makes a difference in people’s lives, offering both professional care and emotional support when it matters most.
Ideal way to spend a free night
My ideal way to spend a free night is by hanging out with friends, either on campus or finding something fun to do out in Philly. I also enjoy taking walks, cooking or baking something new, dancing, or relaxing with a good book. Whether I’m by myself or with friends, I love taking the time to rest and reset in a way that feels refreshing and enjoyable in the moment.
