An Extroverted Sweet Helper!

Hi there, I'm Zion, but most people on campus call me Rose. I enjoy riding my bike, dancing, and listening to music. I consider myself to be independent, humorous, and thoughtful. I'm majoring in elementary education and currently reside on campus. Considering how patient I am and how much I love teaching others, I enjoy working with children!

Clubs, organizations & involvement

I've joined two clubs while I've been in college. One was the BlackQ group, which is for Black queer people on college who comes to support one another and enjoy various activities including outings and discussions. The second was the ASL club where we meet together, practice sign language, and converse while going on outings. I also, participate in a dance team called the Hipnotic Dance Team at school, which primarily consists of Black women and a few men. We dance and perform at various college events. During my first year of college, I worked with an after-school program for kids with limited resources who needed a place to stay and help with their homework until their parents could come and pick them up. For my most recent job,I was grabbing people's products for their orders at Target, which was off campus but not too far away.

Describe your college experience

My transition from high school to university I wasn't used to not being able to reach my family, therefore I was experiencing some homesickness. Even if Chicago isn't that far away, it makes a difference when you leave your room and your family is there as opposed to being more than two hours away. However, as I adjusted, went out, made friends, and became more aware of my independence, I grew accustomed to college life and began to appreciate it more and more. Overall, college hasn't been easy for me thus far, but the more I asked for assistance, the simpler it was for me to avoid having a negative experience. In addition, I've made a lot of friends in college, and I'm glad to be here with like-minded individuals who are all pursuing the same objective!

Tip for future students

I would advise upcoming students to seek assistance as needed. Go to office hours and/or ask your classmates for assistance if you are having trouble understanding the assignment or the material covered in class. One thing I wish I had known before attending college is to be more organized so that when you arrive, you are ready to arrange the tasks you will have coming up so you don't get behind in your classes and know what assignments you need to complete ahead of time rather than at the last minute.

Favorite class

Eduucation 201 has been my favorite course thus far. I appreciated the advice and support it provided aspiring educators on how to make their classrooms better and more welcoming to all students. By helping and caring for each student, the teacher was also a really kind woman who made college more bearable!

Career goals

After college, I want to work as a second or third grade teacher in the suburbs or around Chicago! Compared to other kid groups, I think I can teach that age group the best since I've worked with this group before.

Ideal way to spend a free night

Making some homemade cuisine, mostly spaghetti, or reading on my tablet with music playing in the background are the best ways to spend a free night in!

High school or secondary school

The high school I attented was named George Westinghouse College Prep in Chicago,IL.
