Wake Forest University

Becket: Campus Community Ambassador

Hello, I'm Becket, a current Sophomore at Wake Forest University. I grew up in Boston, MA, and have spent my entire life in the Northeast. In high school, my passions involved soccer and skiing (I used to be a competitive freestyle skier!), and entrepreneurship. I love to adventure and am always spending time outdoors hiking and making new friends. On campus, I'm an ambassador of the Leadership and Character Program and actively engaged in campus organizations like Sigma Pi, the Finance Club, and the Dow Jones Club. My experience at Wake has been a perfect blend of academics, dynamic campus life, and endless opportunities for growth, and I'm excited to help you discover everything that makes our community truly special.

Describe your college experience

Transitioning to college at Wake Forest University has been nothing short of transformative. Coming from a small school, I instantly felt at home on campus—a familiar, close-knit environment that reminded me of high school, yet amplified by an even stronger sense of community and endless opportunities. As an ambassador for the Leadership and Character Program, I've had the privilege of connecting deeply with professors and peers alike. With small class sizes, every lecture feels personal and engaging, and my active involvement in organizations like Sigma Pi, Finance Club, Dow Jones Club, and intramural sports has enriched my academic and social experiences. Every day feels like an adventure—I see friends along every hallway, share meaningful moments in class, and enjoy a vibrant social scene where there's never a dull moment. The Greek life here adds an extra layer of camaraderie, while the beautiful weather and campus setting make every experience memorable. From the moment I set foot on campus, I discovered a group of lifelong friends and mentors who continue to inspire me. Wake Forest has truly become the perfect blend of academic excellence, spirited community, and personal growth, making my transition to college an incredibly rewarding journey.

Tip for future students

Before arriving at Wake Forest, I highly recommend reaching out to a current student to discuss your interests and class options, as this connection can provide valuable insights into the diverse curriculum available. Wake Forest offers courses that range from the study of Star Wars military strategies to quantitative trading finance classes, so don’t hesitate to explore a wide range of subjects that spark your curiosity. Additionally, make the most of campus resources like the Office of Professional and Career Development (OPCD), which can help you optimize your resume and LinkedIn profile, secure internships or jobs, and even provide professional photography and networking opportunities. Finally, getting involved with organizations such as the business fraternity can equip you with essential real-world skills while fostering lasting connections that will support your growth both during and after college.

Favorite class

My favorite class is ENT 301, known as the Deacon Springboard Mentorship Program, where I’m actively building my own business with guidance from experienced serial entrepreneur professors—each a highly successful founder. This course not only provides me with invaluable mentorship and resources, but it has also granted me monetary funding for my business. We work diligently on developing our pitches for Entrepalooza, a Shark Tank-like competition held in the spring semester, where I'll present to a large audience of angel investors, venture capitalists, and industry professionals. The combination of hands-on business development and real-world networking opportunities in this class has been incredibly transformative for my entrepreneurial journey.

Career goals

After college, my primary goal is to pursue my own entrepreneurial ventures, focusing specifically on social entrepreneurship. I am passionate about creating businesses that not only succeed but also have a positive impact on the world. One area that excites me immensely is the rapidly emerging field of AI and machine learning (AI/ML). I believe this technology is poised to transform industries ranging from healthcare to education and beyond, offering innovative solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges. I plan to leverage my economics degree to identify market opportunities where these technologies can be applied for social good, as well as to analyze and optimize business models in this space. I love the process of building things from the ground up, and my goal is to use AI/ML to build scalable, impactful businesses that contribute to economic growth while addressing global challenges.

Ideal way to spend a free night

My ideal way to spend a free night is with friends at Quarry Park, located near Wake Forest. It's a suspended metal bridge that stretches over a giant quarry, offering breathtaking views of Winston-Salem's skyline as the city lights twinkle below. Watching the sunset from there is always an unforgettable experience, with vibrant colors that seem to light up the entire horizon. The bridge itself has a unique charm—its metal grate floor lets you look straight down into the water hundreds of feet below, adding a thrilling sense of fear to the adventure. Perhaps the most intriguing part is the collection of thousands of promise locks attached to the railings of the bridge, each of them telling its own secret story, making the whole experience feel personal and special. It’s the perfect combination of nature, history, and adrenaline, spent in great company.
