Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech and Corps of Cadets expert!
Hey there! My name is Harrison Thon, and I just graduated in December from Virginia Tech. I still live right off campus, and I want to help you learn if VT is right for you! I studied Psychology, took several different languages, was a cadet in the Corps of Cadets and Army ROTC, joined clubs, and graduated early while starting my family. I truly loved my time at Virginia Tech, and I hope that you will too!

Describe your college experience
My transition into freshman year was hard, especially being a cadet, but it was beyond worth the struggle. Here, I got unmatched opportunities to study what I love, to practice leadership, and to build a close community around me. I even found my wife and started a family!
Tip for future students
Take the opportunities! Beyond having great academics and a caring community, Virginia Tech offers countless unique opportunities for every student. Don't be afraid to branch out and take on challenges when they present themselves -- not only will you have fun doing it, you'll learn more about yourself and whatever fields interest you most.
Favorite class
Cognitive Psychology has to have been my favorite course. It covered a wide variety of fascinating psychological topics, and went deep enough into each to give you a good grasp without making you memorize every detail. The workload was very reasonable, and I had a good professor who made sure each student understood the material completely.
Career goals
Upon graduation, I commissioned into the U.S. Army as a Military Intelligence officer! Because of the scholarship I accepted I'll stay in the Army for at least four years, after which I'll either choose to do a full career there or branch out and pursue other national security careers. It's a competitive field, but VT's unique opportunities helped me achieve success in it!
Ideal way to spend a free night
It's all about balance for me -- week nights are usually times to relax, grab some food with friends, or stay in & read or watch TV. Weekends are for bigger fun, like exploring the food & drinks downtown, finding a local adventure (hikes, escape rooms, etc.), or seeing what university events are going on. And don't forget date nights!
